Each year the Tse Qigong Centre produces a polo shirt with some Chinese characters printed or embroidered on it. In the year 2000 the Centre's shirt was a red one with "Health is first" printed on it.
Recently I had a call enquiring about Qigong: what kind of qigong do we teach, what lineage do we have? After I had answered, the person said that according to ancient chinese writings qigong can be used for healing and for harming people, and what did I know of that?
I said that the reason for doing qigong is to improve health. This is what my Sifu has taught me: if you are very rich, that is nice, but you can't buy health; if you are ill, you cannot enjoy your wealth or anything else. Health is the foundation of happiness and, perhaps more importantly, of wisdom. I know of no wisdom or wise person concerned with harming others. On the contrary, people who are regarded as wise invariably talk of helping others, they talk of compassion and of benefiting others. If you are not well, you are not healing yourself, let alone others. So what is most important for all of us is to practise to maintain our own health, both mental and physical, and to grow in wisdom and kindness.
